Interstitial cystitis, which predominantly affects women, in its chronic form can be quite disabling. Chronic inflammation of the inner wall of the bladder is the cause of it. This is due to the alteration of the protective layer which shows a decreased level of mucopolysaccharides (Gag). Current treatment employs hyaluronic acid coupled with chondroitin, aiming at restoring normal levels of Gag in the altered layers.
