Fetal malformations, primarily those of the neural tube from which spina bifida and hydrocephalus derive, can be drastically reduced by regular and continuous intake of folic acid by women of childbearing age.  In several extra European countries, the supplementation is given through food suitably treated, this guarantees adequate intake of folate by the female population sufficient to minimise the risk of fetal malformations.  In Europe, in absence of such regulation, it is essential that this objective is reached through the regular intake,by women on childbearing age, of at leat 400mcg/day of folic acid.
