According to a photograph by the Airc (Italian Association for Cancer Research), in 2022 new cases of cancer, compared to 2020, increased by 1.4% for men and 0.7% for women. It has been calculated that in Italy there have been about 391,000 new cancer diagnoses, 14,000 more than last year. Although the main cause of the increase in cancer diagnoses remains the aging of the population, the document also underlines the secondary effects of the pandemic, resulting from the blocking of screening and treatment activities and the reorganization of healthcare. In fact, in 2020-2021 the slowdowns in cancer diagnoses and screening delayed the diagnosis of cancer, from the early stages to the more advanced ones.
