Vitamin D levels, calcium nutrition and risk of fracture

30 % of patients over 65 suffer from vitamin D defficiency. Use of supplements has been shown in several meta-analyses to be associated with risk reduction regarding all hip, non-spine and  non-hip fractures. The important issue raised over the last couple of years is the safety of calcium supplements with vitamin D. A concern remains about the link between calcium supplements and coronary artery disease, but there is no clear mechanism for this association and the data is quite discrepant.
