Investigations have led to the conclusion that Hyaluronic acid performs an important role in the respiratory mucosa. Since it improves the removal of foreign material and provides protection to the upper and lower respiratory tracts, it plays a primary function in the maintenance of important enzymes for the homeostasis of respiratory mucosa. During the ERS 2014 meeting in Munich, IBSA hosts a Mini Symposium on "The role of Hyaluronan in respiratory diseases". Taking part as chairpersons are Prof. Stavros Garantziotis and Prof. Paolo Castelnuovo. The faculty is represented by Prof. Lorenzo Drago and Prof. Martin Brezina. The focus of the symposium in on the role and function of hyaluronan in the respiratory tract and its properties in bacterial colonization and biofilm production. The clinical use in upper and lower airways of Yabro, a hyaluronan nebulizer solution, is also widely discussed.
