The following is an overview of the role of the vagina in the application of drugs, as well as the adherence and effectiveness of contraception. We will look at the latest developments available and those which have not yet been marketed, in addition to the future developments of vaginal applications. Reviewing the forty-year development of intra-vaginal contraception, we will consider the advantages: avoiding first pass effect, the possibility of using lower dosages and thus possibly reducing the side effects.
