Islet transplants offer similar results to those of other organ transplants in terms of long-term outcomes, although there is still a need for life-long assumption of anti-rejection drugs. New strategies for more effective diabetes treatments focus on engineering a mini-endocrine pancreas in the abdominal cavity, using 3D scaffolds and local protective systems, in order to avoid systemic anti-rejection drugs.
